News from TR Police Chief Crowe, 3/23/2010

Congratulations are in order on three fronts:

First, our very own Devildogs won first place in the first ever Greenville County Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws student film competition. The contest featured “films created entirely by Greenville youth to bring awareness to the consequences of underage drinking.”  Local schools showcased their talent and competed for awards and prizes and nineteen students from TRHS, under the direction of teacher Loyd Henderson, won first place producing the “best overall film”.  They were treated to a red carpet event held at the auditorium at Greenville Tech’s main campus last Thursday.  There is discussion of showing the fifteen minute film just before April’s city council meeting but we’ll have to get back to you on the details.

Second, our city prosecutor, Attorney Andrew Culbreath (who is also captain in the U.S. Army Reserves who returned from Iraq last year) was recently recognized with a MacArthur Leadership Award.  This program “recognizes company grade officers who demonstrate the ideals for which General MacArthur stood—duty, honor, country.  The award promotes and sustains effective junior officer leadership in the Army.”  We are all very proud of Andrew and very grateful to have him on our team.

Finally, we would also like to express public gratitude to seven local retailers for their efforts in reducing underage drinking in Travelers Rest.  As a member agency of the Greenville County Alcohol Enforcement Team, the TRPD sent an undercover operative into seven retail establishments on February 26th to attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages.  To sell to this person would have been a violation of law as this person is underage.   We are very happy to report that seven businesses out of seven checked the operative’s ID and refused to complete the sale.  Those businesses are Bi-Lo, Spinx, W.E. Willis #1 and 2, the Willis Package Store, R&S Gas Stop, and Rite-Aid.  Please congratulate these businesses in their diligence in ensuring that our youth do not have easy access to alcohol in Travelers Rest.
